Summary

This position will perform project specific biological field surveys and natural resource reporting with an emphasis in Alaska. Also responsible for providing technical support within a multi-disciplined team of scientific and environmental professionals. The Biologist will contribute to general environmental investigations, archaeological investigations, NEPA documentation and other environmental sampling and data collection.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work in the field in the performance of biological fieldwork.

  • Conduct biological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring.

  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using hand held units.

  • Participate in a variety of scientific and environmental projects under supervision as assigned.

  • Assist archaeologists and environmental professionals with diverse field work including, but not limited to water quality sampling, forestry, soil sampling and profiling, vegetation sampling, fish collection, noise monitoring, air quality monitoring, wetland delineation, and traffic analysis.

  • Record field observations in a concise, accurate, and legible manner.

  • Share lessons learned and strive for continual program and personal improvement.

  • Contribute to team efforts during natural resources field and lab work.

  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • BS degree in Biology, or a closely related field required.

  • A minimum two (2) years’ experience conducting biological field investigations required.

  • A minimum one (1) year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in biological research, administration or management.

  • Experience with the application of standard biological field techniques required.

  • Ability to travel as needed.

  • Ability to be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain.

  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors/Outdoors – Frequent exposure to moderate to harsh weather conditions. Requires work to be done both inside and outside.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Description of environment: Frequently required to be outside at construction/project sites. Also occasionally inside in standard office setting.

Physical requirements:Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Travel required up to 50 percent of the time. Employee will travel to remote areas and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, helicopters, small airplanes and ATVs.

  • Must be willing and able to adhere to health, safety, and quality assurance protocols.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Willing to work in both urban and remote site locations.

  • Ability to prioritize and organize, work well under stress, and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrate experience planning and leading data recovery operations.

  • Must be competent with various software programs (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Must have good problem resolution abilities.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.

  • Ability to work both out in the field and in an office.
