Mechanical Construction Supervisor – Red Dog Mine, AK



Reporting to the Construction Manager, theMechanical Construction Supervisor is responsible for construction supervisionof Red Dog Capital Projects with specific oversight of mechanical and pipingdisciplines. The Mechanical Construction Supervisor will oversee projects and utilizetheir specific knowledge on mechanical and piping systems to ensure that theprojects are being constructed in accordance with the design documents andquality standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of the Teck Projects Development Frameworkin conjunction with Red Dog Operations.

  • Maintain, implement and demonstrate Teck’s commitment to health,safety, environmental and community (HSEC) protection as a core value.

  • Exhibit leadership and management qualities in the areas of safety,health, environment and community through identification of hazards andmitigation of risk.

  • Managing all aspects of the work as assigned including validation ofcontractor daily reports.

  • Work with HSE supervisor and contractors to promote adherence tosafety, health and environmental policies and procedures.

  • Coordination of work sites and overlapping hazards.

  • Quality assurance, ensuring that site contractors are working to thelatest revised drawings, scope of work and specifications.

  • Verify witness and hold points and perform signing off on inspectionand test plans and completion documents.

  • Attend daily and weekly toolbox and coordination meetings.

  • Verification of quantities for progress payments.

  • Ensure mechanical completion is completed by contractor persystem/sub-system.

  • Contribute to the production of daily, weekly and monthly progress,cost and schedule reports based on contractor execution of work.

  • Coordinate interface between contractor and operations teams.

  • Check that goods and materials arriving onsite are as specified.

  • Verify that installations are completed as per engineering design.

  • Work with the construction manager and pre-commissioning manager toexecute pre- commissioning and assist with commissioning plans.

  • Respond to discipline-specific contractor RFIs.

  • Evaluate change orders and make recommendations to project controls.

  • Support development of quality assurance construction execution plansfor effective management of construction projects.

  • Develop a positive working relationship, liaise and work closely withthe operational stakeholders, functional teams, project team and operationalreadiness teams.

  • Administrative duties appropriate and necessary for the smoothimplementation of the job role.

  • This position has supervisory responsibilities.

  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success mayalso be assigned.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent required. PECertification is preferred.

  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of construction supervision experiencerelated to mechanical and piping systems and in a management role overcontractors.

  • Project experience as an owner’s team representative or as an EPCMcontractor.

  • Project experience coordinating with mine and mill operations groups.

  • Advanced skillset in Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, Outlook andPowerPoint.

  • Experienced in aspects of project controls, scope management, qualitymanagement.

  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record to be eligibleunder vehicle insurance policy.


  • Professional, highly self-motivated, passionate, energetic, creativeand strategic thinker.

  • Knowledge of overall project implementation management processes.

  • Experience with organizational dynamics, some conflict resolutionskills.

  • Able to clearly articulate priorities, success factors, risks andopportunities to the project team.

  • Able to effectively manage teams or disciplines to deliver to projectrequirements.

  • Understands and can discuss application of project procedures.

  • Good understanding and experience in aspects of project controls, scopemanagement, quality management.

  • Motivated self-starter, able to work under minimal supervision and beable to manage several tasks simultaneously.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and writtencommunication skills.

  • Results-oriented with excellent organizational, planning and decisionmaking skill.

  • Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal andexternal customers.

  • Mines first-hand customer information, using it to determine how tobest maximize the opportunity for Kuna and its clients.

  • Always acts with customers in mind, knows how to establish and maintaineffective relationships with customers/prospects and gains their trust andrespect.

Working Conditions and PhysicalRequirements

Weather: Outdoors – Frequentexposure to harsh weather conditions. Requires most or all work to be doneoutside.

Description of environment: Outdoorenvironment operating around construction site. Remote camp conditions. Musthave the ability to work and live in close quarters.

Physical requirements:Employee is required to occasionally liftand/or move up to 75 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, usehands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl,talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Travel required up to75 percent of the time. Employee will travel to remote areas and may berequired to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limitedto snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs.
