Description of Position:

The USGS National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) requires a Biologist III to assist the NWHC Epizootiologist with the conduct of animal studies to develop vaccines against specific disease agents in bats. The research primarily will involve work at the National Wildlife Health Center in a laboratory setting, but some field work will also be required. The contractor will coordinate laboratory studies in various species of captive bats, to include maintenance and feeding of experimental animals, collecting and entering data on spreadsheets, collecting tissue, blood and other samples, vaccinating animals and challenging animal with disease agents, including rabies virus. The candidate will conduct data compilation, descriptive and quantitative data analysis, and contribute to the preparation of writtenproducts including peer-reviewed journals, reportsto partners and funding agencies, USGS fact sheets, and web pages.

Performance Tasks

Task 1. The candidate will participate in planning and conduct of laboratory experiments in animals, primarily wild bat species, with a variety of infectious agents, including the fungus that causes white nose syndrome and rabies virus. Specifically, the candidate will

  • Organize and prepare for laboratory and field experiments by identifying and procuring equipment, supplies and media; developing standard operating procedures and experimental procedures for research studies, and coordinating project activities with other members of the team

  • Perform experiments with live animals (bats), including care of feeding of experimental subjects, administration of treatments, drugs and other agents, collection of blood and tissue samples, euthanasia, and necropsy.

  • Processes samples and runs serologic and other assays

  • Maintains detailed and accurate records, providing Project Leader with data compilation and analyses, written reports, and contributes to writing manuscripts and other information products.

Task 2. The candidate will participate in planning and conduct of field studies in free-flying bats, to test vaccine efficacy and methods of vaccine delivery to bats. Specifically the candidate will:

  • Assist with capture and vaccination of wild bats, either free-flying or placed into cages within caves or mines

  • Monitor effects of vaccine application and collect data, processing samples, running serologic and other tests as needed.

  • Maintain detailed and accurate records, providing Project Leader with data compilation and analysis, written reports as requested

  • Assist in preparation of reports, manuscripts and presentations.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Physical demands include but may not be limited to: standing or sitting in a laboratory or in an office for extended periods of time, wearing respirators and other personal protective equipment, entering caves and mines, and carrying cages and other gear.

  • Specific travel may be required for this task order

  • Monthly reports will be required every month for this position and must be approved by the Task Order Manager and Contractor PM

  • 4-6 years’ experience in applying the scientific method to research studies and hypothesis testing, experience in handling and treating wild animals, demonstrated proficiency in conducting serologic and other laboratory assays, and demonstrated ability to compile and prepare written and oral reports

  • 4-6 years’ experience in a laboratory environment, prefer an individual experienced in all laboratory and safety protocols in accordance with DOI requirements.

  • Graduate degree required in Biology or other relevant curriculum
