Job Introduction Akima Infrastructure Services (AIS), LLC has an opening for a Safety Specialist/Officer located in Livermore, CA at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).
The successful candidate will be an employee of Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC a premier government contractor at the Laboratory that partners with the Lab by finding motivated and well qualified candidates to support the success of their mission.
Under limited supervision and direction, the successful candidate will coordinate and oversee activities in support of the safety and health, security and emergency response projects, and needs of the AIS Safety Program to AIS employees under the contract. Regular interaction with a diverse work force and in the field assessments of safety issues are an integral part of this position. The successful candidate will develop, implement, and administer programs, policies and procedures; provide information, regulatory, and technical support to AIS personnel. The successful candidate will perform a variety of complex administrative and technical tasks to assigned areas of responsibilities; and perform related work as required. The successful candidate will report to Site Program Manager.
This position may require the Safety Specialist have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
Implement and oversight of the AIS Safety Program to all contract employees. Coordinate with our corporate office on implementing safety programs and issues.
Conduct office and field ergonomic evaluations of employees at both Site (S200 & S300); makes appropriate recommendations on remedial measures for potentially ergonomic conditions.
Complete and maintain oversight and reporting of OSHA recordable injury, first aid or near miss incidents and conducting accident/incident safety investigations. Work directly with healthcare professionals to resolve issues.
Perform regular and aggressive case file management. Able to interact with insurance claim representatives, Lab supervisors, employees, medical providers and others to facilitate RTW issues; Willingness to attend medical appointments with injured workers.
Represents the AIS Project with LLNL ESH entities; coordinates program activities; communicates and shares information to improve/ ensure compliance; participates on various organization-wide and interagency committees and teams.
Work with a diverse work force including learning disabled employees and ADA requirements.
Conduct “New Hire Orientation” for employees explaining our Safety Policies and Workers’ Compensation policy and assist with processing new hire paperwork as required.
Prepare “End of Month Activity Reports” and other related activity reports.
Oversight of “Safety Suggestion” programs and articles.
Ability to do “walk-a-bouts” and conduct audits of onsite safety issues.
Conduct root cause analysis and investigations of all incidents and injuries. Prefer TapRoot trained individuals.
Understand the Emergency Evacuation process. Oversee preparations for emergency evacuation.
Implement applicable safety related training programs.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
AA in a Safety or Health field or 10 years of equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge and experience.
Certified Ergonomic Evaluation Special (CEES) certificate or applicable training to perform effective assessments.
Knowledge of Cal/OSHA and OSHA standards; OSHA reporting standards
Effectively perform safety audits, incident investigations, risk analysis and manage workers compensation programs and cases.
Knowledge of PPE and their use such as respirators, masks, gloves, eye and hearing protection, etc. Working knowledge of SDS.
Perform work of a highly specialized nature requiring the ability to use independent judgment and personal initiative.
Apply critical thinking and analysis to a broad range of situations.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing safety programs/issues to small and larger groups.
Ability to work in a diverse environment (laboratory buildings- indoors and outdoors) with a diverse work force (engineers to custodians) and learning disabled employees.
Computer literate to effectively generate reports using software programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and utilize programs related to claims management data base software.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
BS in a Safety or Health field or five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in industrial hygiene, environmental engineering, safety, or related experience.
Valid specialized certification related to safety, i.e. Certified Safety Manager, Ergonomics Certification
First aid and CPR certified
Background in Human Resources issues or Government Contracting requirements.
Note: Employees assigned to work at the Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
