Job Introduction Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. AIS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customers mission. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

This position is supporting the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is the world’s largest and most energetic laser facility ever built. NIF is also the most precise and reproducible laser as well as the largest optical instrument. The giant laser has nearly 40,000 optics, which precisely guide, reflect, amplify, and focus 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) has an opening for an Electronics Technician to provide electrical/ electronic fabrication, assembly, test, installation, activation and maintenance support for NIF’s diagnostic, instrumentation, control and safety systems. Other responsibilities may involve testing, characterization and documentation support. Interactions will be with project leaders, experimentalists, engineers, technical supervisors, technicians, and designers.

Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require the Electrical Fabrication Technician to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. This position may also require working alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12 hour shifts. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Job Description

Essential Duties

  • Provide electronic support, fabrication, test, documentation, and maintenance for NIF Industrial, Safety Interlock, and Integrated Computer Control Systems’ hardware including but not limited to cables (e.g. coaxial, fiber optics, power, multi-conductor), connectors (e.g., BNC, MS, D), electrical and electronics components, chassis, printed wiring boards, electro-mechanical hardware (servo and stepper motors and drives)

  • Work with engineers and technicians to install, modify, test, maintain and commission electronic instrumentation and equipment

  • Utilize industry standard techniques to control ESD around susceptible components

  • Use standard fabrication tools (e.g., soldering iron, crimping tool, pin insertion/removal tools, mechanical hand tools & power tools, drill press, power saws, Rotex punch, shears, sanders) in the fabrication and repair of electrical/electronic hardware

  • Build, troubleshoot and repair electronic circuits.

  • Perform equipment tests and document test results.

  • Read, interpret and follow one-line electrical diagrams, cable plant documentation and schematics

  • Assist in preparing operating/test/troubleshooting procedures.

  • Assure all assignments are performed in accordance with Environmental, Safety, and Health policies and procedures.

Marginal Duties

  • May be required to work shift work and/or overtime.

  • Develop formal training documents (qualification cards, one-lines, basic schematics etc.)

  • Fabricate mechanical parts using machine tools

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Four plus years of education and/or experience related to the Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities of this position.

  • Fabrication skills related to electrical and electronic hardware including but not limited wiring, cable, fiber optic and connector assembly, populating PC boards, and chassis assembly

  • Skills related to the deployment of large-scale systems to the field, including racks, cable plant, safety systems, interfacing to existing hardware.

  • An understanding of working safely in and around electrical and electronic hardware

  • Basic understanding of electrical and electronic hardware including: basic measurements (voltage and resistance), solid-state devices, motors, computer interfaces.

  • Basic understanding of electrical theory (concepts of voltage and current, power and energy, AC and DC systems, analog and digital systems)

  • Experience interpreting electrical schematics and diagrams.

  • Experience implementing hardware solutions for customers’ requirements.

  • Experience integrating, testing, and troubleshooting electrical system hardware.

  • Experience with formal configuration management practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a variety of concurrent activities under tight time constraints.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamically-paced team environment with multi-discipline personnel, while being detailed-oriented and adhering to established work procedures.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact at all levels of management, technical, and administrative personnel.

  • A flexible work schedule is required including the ability to work overtime, shifts, alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12-hour shifts and or weekends to accomplish goals.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • AA/AS in Electronics

  • Experience in board layout and fabrication, component level debugging, assembling

  • Experience with personal computers, micro-controller, PLCs

  • Experience working in and on large electrical/electronic systems

  • Experience with electronic and computer-based instrumentation, data acquisition, control and feedback systems, interlock systems, and mechanical hardware.

  • Experience making independent, functional decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.

  • Experience with system requirements, design documents, configuration control, and preparation and implementation of test plans and user documentation.

  • Experience with distributed computer control systems.

  • Experience with the application of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) to ensure equipment and personnel safety.

  • Experience with servo and stepper motors

  • Knowledge and experience in developing formal training materials and training documentation.

  • Experience with electrical diagnostic instrumentation used in a laboratory (hand-held meters, oscilloscopes and probes, TDRs, etc.)

Special Requirements
