Responsible for assembling and installing pipe systems and pipe supports. Installs pipe for steam, hot water, heating and cooling systems. Piping may include steel, copper, iron, PVC and plastic

Assignments are made in the form of written or oral instructions. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instruction, although routine repairs are usually made independently without supervision or review.

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the pipe fitter trade.

  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Ability to speak, read and write in English.

  • Ability to work from oral and written instructions, sketches, and diagrams.

  • Ability to maintain good relationships with personnel of other departments.

  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds.

Qualifications

  • The ability to lift/haul heavy material (up to 50 pounds)

Though knowledge of power tools associated with the industry

  • The ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, kneel and climb as necessary

Measures, computes, and determines the correct material needed for jobs; provides orders for materials required.

  • Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling,: Selects type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.

  • Cuts pipe, using saws, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine.

  • Threads pipe, using pipe threading machine. Bends pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine.

  • Assembles and installs variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings, including iron, steel, copper, and plastic.

  • Connects pipes, using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints, and hand tools.

  • Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers, using hand tools and power tools

  • Receives work orders and carries out insulation duties.

  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and some experience as a journeyman carpentry; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
