Motor Vehicle Mechanic, Inspector

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks or tractors. Work involves most of the following: Diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required; replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors; overhauling transmissions; and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. In general, the work of the Motor Vehicle Mechanic requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent.


  • Inspects equipment to establish what repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls of major assemblies are necessary and identify worn or broken parts.

  • Responsible for inspecting equipment to DA standards of 10/20/30 level repairs.

  • Determines exact nature and extent of repairs required and performs major and minor overhaul and repair on engines, power transmissions, suspension, steering and braking operational systems and related electrical, fuel, hydraulic, wheel and engine assemblies.

  • May be called upon to perform the full range of work involved in the repair, service, maintenance, and overhaul of any or all types of components.

  • Must be able to perform overhaul procedure’s and complete assigned work in time allotted using Technical Manual’s, National Maintenance Work Requirement (NMWR’s) and Depot Maintenance Work Requirement (DMWR’s).

  • Uses specialized testing equipment such as compression testers, spring compression testers, motor analyzers, test benches and dynamometer’s.

  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair component malfunctions during final testing.

  • Uses and proficient in the use of various type measuring devices used to determine parameters of overhaul inspection points required for overhauled components.

  • Must be able to obtain a license to operate a forklift, other military Tactical vehicles and a CDL license is beneficial.

  • Will be required to use technical manuals, publications, and other written directives in the performance of required inspections.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.



TMDE, automotive repair equipment, material handling equipment, tools, and dynamometer.


Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions. Work will require lifting up to 50 lbs; stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required is certain areas. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices. Must comply with OSHA, EPA, Fire Regulations and published Company work rules.

Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Five years’ experience in vehicle maintenance. Experience with

military vehicles and the Army Maintenance Management System is

a plus.

Must possess and continuously maintain a current State of Colorado Driver’s License prior to hire or 30 days after employment.

maintain a NACI. Must receive a favorable background check and drug

testing results.
