POSITION SUMMARY:

Someone in this position specializes in operating one or more than one type of machine tool (e.g., jig, borer, grinding machine, engine, engine lathe, milling machine) to machine metal for use in making or maintaining jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material(e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass). Work typically involves: planning, and performing difficult machining operations which require complicated setups or a high degree of accuracy, setting up machine tool or tools (e.g. installing cutting tools and adjusting guides, stops, working tables and other controls to handle the size of stock to be machined.

The Machine Tool Operator determines proper feeds, speeds, tooling, and operation sequence or selects those prescribed in drawings, blueprints, or layouts. Work also involves using a variety of precision measuring instruments, making necessary adjustments during machining operation to achieve requisite dimensions to very close tolerances. This worker may be required to select proper coolants and cutting and lubricating oils to recognize when tools need dressing, and to dress tools. In general, the work of a Machine-Tool Operator (Tool Room) at the skill level called for in this classification, requires extensive knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices usually acquired through considerable on-the-job training and experience.

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

  • Performs work involved in the manufacture of forgings, and other fabrications, through the use of machine tools and precision handwork.

  • Sets up and operates most types of conventional machine tools such as lathes, vertical and Horizontal boring mills; bench, plain or universal milling machines; shapers; internal and external grinders; thread grinders; and radial drills.

  • Frequently uses a variety of auxiliary machine tool attachments such as rotary vises, dividing heads; taper attachments, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, tapping attachments, rotary tables, etc.

  • Lays out work from blueprints, sketches, work orders, model of part or tool to be made, or other specifications; determines which machine tool would best be used for each operation to be performed, which attachments are to be used on each machine, and the proper sequence of operations on each machine; and makes new job setups on a variety of different types of equipment involving accurate alignment in order to maintain specified overall tolerances.

  • Determines speeds, feeds, and coolants, lubricants or abrasives to be used to cut, turn, drill, mill, bore, tap, ream, lap, hone, shape, grinding, or finish item.

  • Maintains dimensional accuracy during these processes through the use of precision measuring instruments such as veneer calipers, inside and outside micrometers, surface gages, height gages, squares, and dial indicators.

  • Uses shop mathematics and handbook formulas in computing dimensions and in planning and laying out work.

  • Maintains bench stock needed for machine shop, as appropriate.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

Lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plain or universal milling machines; shapers; planers; internal and external grinders; thread grinders; and radial drills.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve working in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions. Work will require lifting up to 50 lbs; stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting.. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required is certain areas. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices. May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must comply with published Company work rules.

FREEDOM TO ACT:

Reports to Allied Trades lead or Supervisor and functions under his/her direct guidance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Five years of experience in machine shop utilizing various

machinery and techniques or equivalent combination of

education and experience.

SECURITY CLEARANCE:Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and

maintain a NACI. Must receive a favorable background check and drug test results.
