Job Summary Creates mechanical or electrical design using a variety of tools, Including three-dimensional solid modeling software. Responsible for the creation and configuration management of detailed drawings, layouts, and illustrations. Plans, lays outs, draws, and revises detailed part, assembly, and installation engineering drawings from basic layouts, established references, and standard data in a field of specialization. Completes details of major layout drawings prepared by others in accordance with standard engineering drafting practices.
Job Specifications We are seeking motivated CAD Designers to join our dynamic Design Engineering Group (2270). Applicants may be sourced and selected for any departments within the organization. The Mechanical Design departments provides mechanical design engineering services using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, such as Pro/Engineer and other 3D modeling tools, to mathematically represent the physical attributes of the product. We partner with Product Realizations Teams (PRTs) to produce high quality design models and engineering drawings of systems, components and layouts including assembly and piece part definition using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GO&T). We determine the physical characteristics of the product to be manufactured, including geometric form, interface features, manufacturing specifications, processes, and assembly instructions. We ensure design feasibility from a manufacturing and product maintenance perspective. We communicate the design options and recommended approach to product development teams, stakeholders, and manufacturing partners. We apply technical judgment based upon engineering principles in the design and development of innovative products for supporting our Nation's security programs.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability Knowledge of and ability to apply GD&T, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American National Standards Institute, and other appropriate standards for dimensioning and tolerancing. Knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design, and high-level three dimensional parametric CAD systems. Knowledge of SECOND-CAD (Systems Engineering CONceptual Design-CAD) system. Knowledge of mathematical formulas and computations. Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods. Knowledge of engineering principles and technical responsibilities within designated discipline. Knowledge of relevant Sandia National Laboratories' procedures, standards, and guides. Knowledge of industry, regulatory, Department of Energy, or National Nuclear Security Administration complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline
Minimum Qualifications (Required) Associates Degree in Design and Drafting Technology or equivalent
5 years of mechanical design experience with 3D CAD modeling
Preferred Qualifications (Desired) 3D modeling in Creo
2D Drawing experience in AutoCAD
