Job Summary Supports science and engineering research, development, and engineering (RD&E) activities which are characterized primarily by their non-routine, prototypical nature. Helps RD&E technical staff realize their Ideas and designs and accomplish project goals. Working in a laboratory or facility, operates and maintains experimental equipment, performs experiments, maintains a safe environment, and makes, records, and documents observations. Performs a wide variety of technical procedures with minimal direction.

We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to work as an integral part of this team providing calibration, testing and maintenance services for the Neutron Generator Enterprise. This position also requires a combination of some previous hands-on experience and relevant training covering a diverse range of technical disciplines. The successful candidate must be able to work in a high rigor, schedule driven production environment and be able to demonstrate excellent time management skills. The positions also require very strong equipment diagnostic and problem solving skills, along with a technical aptitude related to metrology and equipment maintenance. Experience performing corrective maintenance for manual and computer controlled precision electro-mechanical equipment is desired. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and provide recommendations to resolve calibration, maintenance and repair issues, generate certificates and reports, write calibration procedures, and work with the engineering staff to make procedural improvements. The work requires the use of a metrology database and data acquisition software. Formal and on-the-Job training will be available for the selected individual. A participative selection process will be used.

Job Specifications Conducts chemical, biological, or physical experiments to assist scientists and engineers in the performance of RD&E, and performs qualitative and quantitative analyses for work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical applications of science or technology. Develops new experimental processes, utilizes novel analytical techniques, establishes new characterization methods, optimizes existing laboratory and characterization techniques, and performs experiments. Develops, builds, modifies, repairs, or maintains a wide variety of laboratory apparatus and equipment, and interfaces this equipment for data acquisition. Develops and maintains material and process specifications to support engineering and scientific processes and works with key suppliers. Performs data analysis and Interpretation, statistical error analysis, materials characterization, and information extraction, and formally documents results for the customer. Supports documentation and publication efforts, Including the preparation of information for scientific and engineering publications. Performs work in a safe and compliant manner, seeks out subject matter expert advice as needed, and maintains the necessary documentation.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability

Requires an understanding of the scientific method and experimental procedures. Skill and knowledge in one or more areas of physics, chemistry, computer science, materials science, lasers, optics, engineering, radiation, microelectronics, semiconductors, or biology. Ability to apply analytical and computer skills. Ability to interface equipment to data acquisition systems. Knowledge of utilization of instrumentation to measure and observe physical phenomena and effects. Ability to develop expert knowledge of laboratory equipment and processes to enable making adjustments when necessary and to recognize when equipment malfunctions. Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of experimental design and results and to represent to other staff, management, and visitors, the scientific and engineering principles being investigated or developed. Experience and demonstrated skill In conducting research, investigating anomalies and alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems. Ability to work independently with minimal guidance, as well as collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to write operating procedures, methods of analysis, and laboratory procedures.

Minimum Qualifications (Required) Associate's degree or above; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. In addition to the educational requirements, 2 or more years relevant work experience

Experience in these areas; working in a lab or production environment, using or maintaining complex measurement and processing equipment and reading drawings and schematics

Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level security clearance

Preferred Qualifications (Desired) Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or similar STEM discipline

Experience performing calibrations of precision measurement equipment

Demonstrated experience working independently as well as part of a team

Evidence that the candidate is a pro-active worker with past experience negotiating schedules with customers and delivering to those agreements

Experience assembling, modifying, operating and maintaining high vacuum systems and related equipment including measurement gauges (e.g. RGAs) cryogenic pumps

Demonstrated experience and desire for complying with safety requirements

Active DOE Q-Level security clearance
