DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adheres to the policies, procedures and accreditation standards as prescribed by IHSC.

  • Provides direct patient care in a residential environment under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Physician.

  • Works within the scope of practice of state license and performs functions outlined in the IHSC Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse (LVN/LPN) competencies.

  • Treatment of persons throughout the life span (infancy through geriatrics).

  • Performs record keeping functions in accordance with program policies.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality and confidentiality of medical records.

  • Assures compliance with the Privacy Act in all activities.

  • Attends general/medical staff meetings as required.

  • Completes all training as required/assigned.

  • Demonstrates proficiency with electronic health record as appropriate to position.

  • Evaluates health care needs of residents and assists RN in the development of nursing care plans to meet those needs.

  • Assists with gathering resident data during sick call and medical appointments.

  • Obtains medical information on residents using pre-established questionnaire and appropriately refers abnormal findings or responses or stated medical problems to the RN, mid-level provider or physician.

  • Collect laboratory specimens as requested per IHSC policy and procedures.

  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered/recommended in accordance with scope of practice of state of licensure.

  • Able to maintain safety when dispensing medications and is continually cognizant of the potential hazards of drug hoarding and trafficking among residents.

  • Provide patient/resident education as appropriate.

  • Coordinates health care needs of residents with healthcare team and coordinates referrals to off-site providers as required.

  • Assures a safe and clean working environment at all times.

  • Participates as member of health care team to ensure that needed equipment, supplies and logs are available, clean, functional and up to date.

  • Provides radiological services in accordance with scope of practice of state of licensure. These services will be primarily to conduct tuberculosis surveillance i.e. digital single view chest x-rays.

  • Must perform assigned duties in a fast paced, fluid environment. Adaptability and flexibility are required.

  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, to include weekends and holidays.

  • May participate in peer reviews, Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance activities, Infection Control activities, investigations or other clinically significant activities onsite. 25. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate from an approved, accredited Vocational/Practical Nurse program located in a State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.

  • Maintains current, active and unrestricted licensure by the state of practice. Any changes to license must be reported to employer immediately.

  • Must have a minimum of one year experience in a hospital, medical office or residential setting.

  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-language environment and be able to utilize interpreter services to complete assigned duties if not fluent in a language the resident understands.

  • Continuous provider CPR/BLS certification required.

  • Maintains professional clinical skills via continuing education opportunities as required by state of practice.

  • Experience in treatment of persons throughout the life span (infancy through geriatrics) strongly desired.

  • Must adhere to practical nursing principals, procedures and techniques for appropriate patient care and take direction from registered nurses and onsite administrative personnel.

  • Must adhere to medication administration guidelines, understand pharmaceutical agents and their desired effect recognize adverse effects and take appropriate corrective measures.

  • Knowledge of regulations on the confidentiality of medical records (HIPAA).

  • Must appropriately document patient/resident encounters according to current standards of care using electronic health records.

  • Ability and proficiency to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to develop a rapport with patients and coworkers so as to facilitate good communication, which includes the ability to provide patient education.

  • Must have the ability to navigate in an electronic environment, using software systems specific to the site including email, eHR (electronic health record), Virtual University and other systems required.

  • Must adhere to requirements for safety, infection control, quality assurance, maintenance of records of patients seen, statistical information gathering, etc.

  • Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures.

  • Must pass initial Security Investigation by ICE prior to first day on duty and maintain clearance for the duration of time on the contract.

  • Ability to communicate proficiently in English in order to develop rapport with residents, coworkers and administration.

  • Must be able to pass competencies for assigned duties during orientation, annually and as requested.

  • May be expected to respond, initiate and oversee medical emergencies.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Expected to demonstrate clinical competencies during orientation, annually and as needed to meet the requirements of the mission.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Required to walk unaided at a normal pace for up to 10 minutes and maintain balance.

  • Required to respond to any medical emergency within 4 minutes, where a fast walk or jog may be necessary to provide assistance.

  • Required to perform CPR/emergency care standing or kneeling.

  • Must have the ability to assist sick, injured or aging detainees or staff exiting the building during an emergency (may require lifting, dragging, wheeling or carrying someone who weighs significantly more than self).

  • Must be able to see, hear and smell with or without the use of aides if necessary (exceptions on a case by case basis).

  • Must easily alternate between kneeling and standing.

  • Must be able to lift, push, or carry 30 pounds.

  • Must perform the duties in a stressful and often austere environment without physical limitations.

  • Must be capable of standing on hard services (cement floors) for long periods of time.
