Job Introduction Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. AIS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customers mission. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

The Maintenance Services Division of the Central Facilities & Infrastructure Department has multiple openings for Gardeners. The successful candidates will perform landscaping maintenance and installation duties of a gardener at full proficiency level. This position will be assign to work at Site 300, an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Note: Employees assigned to work at the Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

This position may require the Gardener have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Job Description

Essential Duties

  • Perform site wide landscaping and grounds maintenance.

  • Maintain, repair and install automatic and central irrigation systems and new landscape installation by using blueprints for planting and irrigation layouts.

  • Perform specialized tasks, including high tree pruning, operate chipper, mulchers and hustler mower.

  • Apply herbicide with hand tank sprayer.

  • Operate all standard equipment of gardener tasks including bike path sweeper, wood chippers, aerial platform trucks, tractors, trenching equipment, motor vehicles, and other equipment common to the landscape trade.

  • Responsible and accountable for performing tasks in accordance with ES&H (Environmental, Safety, and Health) regulations and procedures, fulfilling all integrated safety, security, and property management responsibilities, as appropriate.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Intermediate to advanced skills and experience performing a variety of landscape maintenance duties, including maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install automatic and central irrigation systems.

  • Experience mowing, trimming and pruning of lawns, shrubs and trees and demonstrated ability to perform specialized tasks, including high tree pruning and operating mulching equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate all standard equipment of gardener tasks, including bike path sweeper, wood chippers, aerial platform equipment, tractors, trenching equipment, and motor vehicles, and to use chemicals and fertilizers common to the trade and to spot spray weeds in the landscape.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and to understand various universal safety signs and ability to learn Laboratory-specific signs located in and around buildings when conducting various landscaping maintenance duties.

  • Demonstrated customer service and communication skills and the ability to work independently or as a team member interacting well with others.

  • Basic computer skills necessary to input timekeeping and complete web-based training.

  • Must possess valid California driver license and ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 80 pounds, in a safe and controlled manner.

Special Requirements

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (Position will be cleared at this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold dual citizenship (U.S. and another country), you will be required to renounce your other citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
