SUPERVISORY DETENTION OFFICER

Supervisory Detention Officers are responsible for overseeing daily detention and transportation operations, as well as short and medium range planning, scheduling, and evaluation. Supervisory Detention Officers provide first-line supervision for detainee monitoring, security patrols, access control, security related escort duties, detainee transportation, and security and fire safety surveillance. While these are the primary duties, other security related duties may be assigned as needed and required. Supervisory Detention Officers report to the Project Manager who provides instruction and direction.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a first-line supervisor, supervises a medium sized staff and performs a full range of supervisory functions.

  • Plans and schedules work on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and longer basis. Sets and adjusts priorities and prepares schedules for completion of work. Assigns work based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and capabilities of the employees.

  • Monitors and evaluates employees' work. Establishes or recommends performance stands and evaluations. Counsels subordinates on performance requirements. Discusses progress toward performance goals and identifies areas needing improvement. Assures employees have a balanced view of their strengths and areas needing improvement in relation to performance expectations. Implements policies intended to improve and develop employees. Assures developmental activities are provided so that employees' potential may be achieved.

  • Monitors and evaluates the delivery

  • of services to the client and the methods and techniques used to provide them. Develops and implements plans to improve the delivery of services, individually, with other supervisors, and through process improvement teams.

  • Recommends adding or deleting services and upgrading facilities and equipment to improve services.

  • Approves leave. Hears and resolves complaints from employees, refers group grievances and more serious complaints to a higher level. Takes or recommends disciplinary action, as appropriate, and recommends actions in more serious cases or those involving subordinate supervisors.

  • Promotes affirmative action goals and the achievement of equal opportunity requirements.

  • Review of reports on work and individual cases, both specific and statistical, manually and through automated systems. Monitors trends and patterns and recommends changes and improvements in operations, methodology or program.

  • Responsible for the armed or unarmed escort of aliens, under final orders of removal.

  • Responsible for detention responsibilities including care, supervision and transportation (including prison pick-ups and court transportation) of aliens detained in ICE custody.

  • Must be able to pass a background investigation to include criminal, credit and driving record checks.

  • Must be able to pass US Government background investigation for required security clearance.

  • Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968, Suitability applies.

  • Must meet client suitability.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Skill in written and oral communication, such as preparation of correspondence, reports, and other documents; the ability to brief or otherwise convey plans, policies and guidelines, and to tactfully and diplomatically resolve problems and convince others to adopt recommendations made.

  • Speak, read, write, and understand English

  • Concisely and accurately prepare and write/review narratives of incidents and other written reports

  • Pass and maintain required medical and physical testing requirements and standards

  • Exercises judgment and uses discretion in dealing with first response to any and all situations

  • Demonstrate proficiency in methods and techniques of securing and controlling detainees by following required training, policy and procedure

  • Maintain physical fitness standards and proficiency with firearms issued and other special equipment

  • Maintain a professional personal appearance, calm demeanor, and discretion with confidential information

  • Possess a high degree of integrity, accountability and adhere to the American Correctional Association and DHS ICE National Detention Standards

  • Ability to work with a diverse population of people, including people of different cultures, with different values and lifestyles; with a cross cultural perspective
