Job Summary Supports science and engineering research, development, and engineering (RD&E) activities which are characterized primarily by their non-routine, prototypical nature. Helps RD&E technical staff realize their ideas and designs and accomplish project goals. Working in a laboratory or facility, operates and maintains experimental equipment, performs experiments, maintains a safe environment, and makes, records, and documents observations. Performs a wide variety of technical procedures with minimal direction.

Job Specifications The individual hired for this fast paced position will be a member of the Z Operations Center Section team and is responsible for activities including, but not limited to, loading and unloading the Z Machine, stack refurbishment and magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITL) refurbishment in the MITL tent. For two (2) to six (6) hours daily, this individual will be wearing personal protection equipment, including full Tyvek and respirator. The individual will climb up and down ladders numerous times a day in personal protective equipment. The individual will bend, twist, climb, crawl, crouch, squat, push, and pull. The individual will be walking fast paced on uneven surfaces. The individual will be operating hand tools, grinders, sanders, and wrenches. The individual will be trained to run a forklift and crane and will be hoisting and lifting large loads. The individual will be entering and working in confined spaces and un-air conditioned environments. Once trained, computer and office work will be minimal.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability Requires an understanding of the scientific method and experimental procedures. Skill and knowledge in one or more areas of physics, chemistry, computer science, materials science, lasers, optics, engineering, radiation, microelectronics, semiconductors, or biology. Ability to apply analytical and computer skills. Ability to interface equipment to data acquisition systems. Knowledge of utilization of instrumentation to measure and observe physical phenomena and effects. Ability to develop expert knowledge of laboratory equipment and processes to enable making adjustments when necessary and to recognize when equipment

Malfunctions. Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of experimental design and results and to represent to other staff, management, and visitors, the scientific and engineering principles being investigated or developed. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating anomalies and alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems. Ability to work independently with minimal guidance, as well as collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to write operating procedures, methods of analysis, and laboratory procedures.

Minimum Qualifications (Required) Requires a high school diploma plus one to two years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience;

--Extensive experience in a high stress, high intensity, fast paced environment;

--Experience walking at a fast paced on uneven surfaces for long periods.

-- Extensive experience in working in challenging work conditions for great lengths of time (wearing

Tyvek, respirators, and working in confined space(s));

--This position requires wearing a respirator and full Tyvek four (4} to six (6} hours daily; bending, twisting, climbing, crawling, crouching/squatting, pushing, and/or pulling. This position also requires lifting more than 35lbs with or without assistance;

--Must be able to operate hand tools, grinders, sanders, wrenches

--Climb up and down ladders several times a day.

--Must be able and willing to work in a Beryllium Regulated Area and Radiological Contamination Area

--Possess a valid driver's license. Have the ability to operate a government vehicle.

--Must be able to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy "Q" security clearance.

--Must be able to obtain and maintain respirator qualification to wear/use respiratory protection.

An employment offer and an assigned start date are contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screen test.
