Job Summary

Develops,implements,and evaluates programs and procedures to protect workers, the public, and the environment from the effects of ionizing radiation in compliance with federal regulations and Department of Energy contract requirements and consistent with industry standards, as applicable.Monitors personnel radiation exposures, environmental

releases, and release of material and surface-type contaminants.

Job Specifications .

Knowledge, Skills, Ability Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research,investigating alternative solutions,and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety and protection. Knowledge of the technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques of health physics. Ability to conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of radiological safety and protection to both technical and nontechnical personnel. Competent in federal,state,local,and industry radiation protection regulations.Competent in interfacing with external regulatory body personnel. Skill in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety and protection reports. Ability to mentor and lead lesser experienced personnel.

Minimum Qualifications (Required) •Masters degree in health physics or nuclear engineering.

•Minimum of ten years professional level health physics related work experience,particularly operational radiation protection experience in one or more of the following activities: accelerators, reactors, waste management,environmental restoration,research and development using radioactive material or radiation generating devices, or conducting audits/self-assessments.

•Working knowledge of applicable occupational radiation protection and quality assurance rules, including 10CFR835 and 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.

•Computer skills,including working knowledge of word processing,spreadsheet,and database

applications.

•Possess a valid driver's license. Have the ability to operate a government vehicle or have access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired) •Ability to work individually and in teamed/matrixed situations in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.

•Excellent oral and written communication skills.

•Strong interpersonal and customer relations skills and ability to effectively work with a variety of personality types and educational levels.

•Ability to understand the intent of applicable requirements and apply them in a graded and practical manner.

•Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills.

•Ability to handle multiple projects effectively.

•A strong and proactive desire to improve the radiological protection program at SNL.

•Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs.

•Experience working at a DOE National Laboratory.

•CHP.

•Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy "Q" security clearance.

•Undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

•Graduate GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

•Obtain respirator qualification to wear/use respiratory protection including SCBA and air-line.
