Fire Alarm System Mechanic
Akima Intra-Data provides support services to the federal and civilian agencies of the U.S Government as well as commercial organizations. Our core competencies include training and training system development, data and records management, information technology, administrative support, facilities operations and management, and base operations support services.
Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and installs various types of electrical or electronic alarms and other devices in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications, National Fire Protection Association standards, Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC),or any Air Force or State of New Mexico operating instructions. Systems and devices include fire alarm systems, intrusion detecting systems, and others as needed.
Specific Responsibilities :
Performs maintenance, and repairs on fire or security/intrusion alarm equipment, and HVAC controls. The maintenance performed on these items will be in accordance with the local maintenance action sheets (MAS), or the UFC’s criteria. As a function of the recurring maintenance, all actions performed will be annotated on the necessary checklist form.
Performs tests on fire and security alarm to ensure systems work correctly.
Tests initiating and signal circuits, detectors, and system transmitter and makes needed repairs.
Replace components and wiring circuits.
Tests, troubleshoots, and replaces defective electronic equipment as required to bring fire, security, and HVAC controls back to operational status.
Disassembles malfunctioning instruments and examines and tests mechanism and circuitry for defects.
Uses common instruments such as digital multi-meters, electronic thermometers, or common hand tools to reassemble instruments and tests assembly for conformance with specifications.
Inspect instruments periodically and makes minor calibration adjustments to insure functioning within specified standards.
Repairs fiber optic cabling system by replacing connectors or splicing. Installs and repairs network cabling systems or transmission lines to and from HVAC controls, fire alarms, and security systems.
Ensures techniques, materials, and accomplishments are according to technical standards, and specifications and engineered directives.
Conducts various tests or experiments, which may require minor modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurements.
Assist in design modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials, which are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts.
Determines materials needed for repair work, and or new installations and prepares requisition.
Use portable radios to communicate with supervisors, and service call desk.
Timely completion and accuracy of all work.
Working closely and harmoniously with other employees.
Adherence to contract requirements, safety and health regulations, and company policies.
Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work is subject to extreme temperatures, noise, and inclement weather conditions and other conditions determined by the nature of the job. Tasks may be performed on uneven, inclined, hard, and can be on cement, asphalt or metal structures and surfaces.
Fire alarm technician training typically involves completing either an associate degree program from a community college or a course through the ESA, covering coursework in fire alarm systems, basic electrical wiring, fire alarm codes and national electrical codes.
Fire Alarm Systems certification (Level I, II, III or IV), administered by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), is highly preferred.
Certified Fire Alarm Technician (CFAT) required.
Valid New Mexico driver’s license.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Knowledge of hand and power tools.
Three-year similar verifiable experience.
Ability to understand and have working knowledge of hazardous, safety,and environmental warnings.
Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolds and walkways; be able to complete assigned tasks in high or confined spaces.
Shall have and maintain current State of New Mexico licensure (ES-3J defined under New Mexico Administrative Code 126.96.36.199.C(6)) and shall have not less than the fire alarm system manufacturer's minimum recommended training, qualifications, and certifications for each type of system.
Personnel who test, repair, or maintain fire suppression systems shall have and maintain current State of New Mexico licensure (MS-12 as defined under New Mexico Administrative Code 188.8.131.52.C(3)).
Personnel who test, repair, or maintain dry chemical fire suppression systems shall have and maintain current State of New Mexico licensure (MS-14J as defined under New Mexico Administrative Code 184.108.40.206.C(4)).
Must be willing to work outside in inclement weather
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, reach and bend for extended periods of time.
Must be able to lift 50lbs.
